I was born in Virginia Beach, grew up near Chicago, and came to Austin for undergrad. I've lived in Austin longer than anywhere else and I love it. In high school I played soccer, field hockey, and did a lot of horseback riding. In college I played on the womens' racquetball team. Several years after law school, I started training in another martial art called Kajukenbo. When I started exploring the groundfighting aspects of Kajukenbo, I realized I appreciated the aliveness of the training-- you don't pull punches to be kind to your training partner, you exert yourself fully and trust them to tap before injury happens. I gradually transitioned to Brazilian jiu jitsu and haven't looked back. I'm a 3-stripe blue under Relson Gracie, training with black belts Phil Cardella, Richard Giberson and Donald Park. I've been training for a year and a half, and usually I train seven days a week. I prefer the gi, but playing nogi has helped my takedown game and my speed/explosiveness. I crosstrain with weights, running, judo, and wrestling.My husband also trains jiu jitsu, and together we enjoy teaching salsa dancing. When I'm home, I love to cook, play in the garden, or curl up with a good book. When I travel, I love to dive.

I have been in Martial Arts my whole life and started learning karate, jujitsu and boxing when I was 4yrs old! Around age 9, I started training in Chang Hon, TaeKwonDo, to which I now currently hold the rank of 7th degree black belt at the age 31. While training in TaeKwonDo, I earned multiple national and state championships within the USTA/ITA. But my love for martial arts and competition didn't stop there! I eventually started training in Kickboxing and have won 2 Alabama State Championships through the Alabama Karate Circuit (AKC)! I started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu almost 3yrs ago and my love for competition drove me to win 4 Alabama State Championships through the Alabama Grappling Circuit (AGC) in both Gi and in No Gi! In Jan. of this year my husband and myself earned the rank of Blue Belt under Joe Cunningham a BJJ Black Belt with the Yamasaki BJJ Academy in VA. I decided to step it up a notch and drive to NAGA in Georgia this past summer and took 1st place in No Gi and 3rd Place in Gi in the Women's Intermediate 119.9 lbs & below division!! I want to be a role model for other female 'combat sports' athletes!! I was raised in the martial arts, and many times I have been the sole female in class. I would love to see MORE women/girls in the martial arts and competiting!!!

Courtney has been doing BJJ for about a year and trains at Cleber Jiu Jitsu in Huntington Beach, CA with Cleber Luciano. Courtney was recently in The Kids BJJ Worlds and took home Silver for her division. At the Best of the West in Riverside (by OTM) she took home Silver (w/Gi) and then the following day took home Bronze (no Gi).She is a force to be reckoned with!
